If you’ve done your research on dermal fillers, you might’ve learned that there are different injection techniques, including the use of a cannula.

Is a cannula needle better for dermal fillers?

Here’s a Quick Look at the Difference Between a Regular Needle and Cannula Needle

There are basic differences between the two devices you should know before we answer, “Is a cannula needle better for dermal fillers?”

Needles are pointed and typically shorter than a cannula. In addition, they are often rigid, although flexible versions do exist. When using a needle for fillers, multiple entry points are necessary, and the force used to pierce the skin is what causes bruising. Recovery time can also be longer.

As for cannulas, these are always flexible, have a blunt end, and require only mild force to puncture skin (which can mean less bruising). It’s also longer and only a few entry points are needed for fillers. It usually takes less time to heal as well.

Is a Cannula Needle Better for Dermal Fillers?

When it comes to cannulas vs needle, it really depends on factors such as the size of the areas you wish to address, the amount of filler being used, and your pain threshold. If this is your first time getting injections, the injector may suggest a cannula to minimize discomfort.

Smaller areas can easily be done with a needle, as can quick filler touch ups. If you are treating wide areas where more filler is needed, it is likely your injector will choose a cannula because it allows for a continuous flow of product.
